In 1992, the United Nations declared December 3 as the International Day of People with Disabilities. In December 2006, Armenia joined the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities. In February 2008, a National Commission on Disability was established in Armenia with the primary goal of protecting the rights of people with disabilities and ensuring affordable conditions.

There are 650 million people with different types of disabilities around the world, 177,000 in Armenia.
